AmeriCorps Ally Program

Description

Public Allies is a national movement grounded in the conviction that everyone leads. We believe that everyone can make a difference and can work to inspire more citizens to believe in themselves, step up, and act. Throughout our nation's history, lasting social change has always resulted from the courageous acts of many, not just the inspiration of the few. Our mission is to create a just and equitable society and the diverse leadership to sustain it. We are changing the face and practice of leadership in communities across the country by demonstrating our conviction that everyone can lead, and that lasting social change results when citizens of all backgrounds step up, take responsibility, and work together. Our partnership with AmeriCorps dates back to its founding in 1994. Since then, our signature AmeriCorps Ally Program has identified thousands of diverse young adults and prepared them for leadership.

Our learning process weaves together four key elements that constitute an experiential journey of self-discovery and professional development: Practical, on-the-job learning through a paid, full-time nonprofit apprenticeship; Rigorous leadership training; Building community through our cohort model, and; Mentoring, coaching, and continual self-reflection. Allies are placed with with a nonprofit organization where they help address critical community needs such as youth development, education, workforce development, environmental issues, arts programming and community health. Our AmeriCorps program is a dynamic pipeline for talented young people to emerge as leaders and to strengthen the capacity of community organizations.
